What is Top Soil? What is Compost?
Top Soil is great general soil from your lawn or garden bed. If you are planning to grow herbs and veggies, you may want to mix in some compost or fertilizer for your specific plants.
Compost is decaying organic matter, also known as plant food. It fortifies your soil and helps it to retain moisture as well. If you plan on growing tomatoes, fruit trees, or squash, add compost to the planting holes. These plants (to name just a few) will thank you for it!

Why Use Mulch?
Apart from being an aesthetics choice, mulch has many benefits. It helps keep your garden free of weeds while retaining the moisture. Also, if you decided in following seasons that you want a new color mulch or to try a new type of ground cover, you don’t need to remove the old mulch! Mulch will decompose in time enriching your garden without much extra labor.

Why Use Stone?
Pebbles and small rocks need very little maintenance when used as a ground cover. If a weed barrier is put on the ground before the stones are spread, say goodbye to weeding. Water drains more quickly through small stones and gravel. A layer of stone in wet spots can help you avoid puddling messes. A downsides to this ground cover is when you decide you to change, it will be much more labor intensive than changing a decomposing ground cover like mulch.
